ENERGY IN MANUFACTURE
Overseas tests by BASF have shown that the energy used to produce polystyrene is much less than other insulation products. Using polystyrene as an insulator, which far outweighs the cost in energy to manufacture the material, saves energy. The gas and vapours that are given off at the point of manufacture is Pentane and with Pentane being a natural gas, it is harmless to our atmosphere and ozone layer.
Energy Saving Qualities of EPS
Fully recyclable reducing environmental waste
Insulating Properties reducing energy when heating & cooling
Water resistant material reducing spoilage
EPS comprise of 98% air resulting in the efficient use of raw material
EPS is lightweight reducing consumption of transport fuels
Resilient material reducing product breakage
Most importantly there are NO CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbon) resulting in the protection of the Ozone
Moisture
Polystyrene, when force-saturated to a moisture content of ten percent of volume, will retain 80% of its thermal value, therefore retaining the energy saving characteristics. When polystyrene is saturated with moisture, odors are not emitted and there is no nutritional value to support algae or fungi, thereby negating hazardous growths and decomposition.
Toxicity
CSIRO reports comment that when polystyrene is ignited, the toxicity of gases given off is not greater than that associated with burning timber. (H. Hofman & H Oettel Comparative Toxicity of Thermal Decomposition Products.)
Recycling
Foamex Polystyrene Pty Ltd is fully committed to the recycling of expanded polystyrene (EPS) material waste. It is our policy to recycle and convert into other EPS product, all of our internal manufacturing waste as well as scrap material produced by our customers. We accomplish this by utilizing our granulating machines to reduce the molded EPS into bead which is the reformed into new product. The granulated product is also used for aeration in potting and garden mix to produce a healthier soil environment.
Our recycling facilities serve EPS end-users, building and road construction sites, packaging facilities and other EPS manufacturers.
Foamex Polystyrene Pty Ltd is a proud member of Recycling Expanded Polystyrene Australia (REPSA) and follows all recommended EPS distribution and clean-up procedures and responsibilities.
